Merriam-Webster offered up a vocabulary lesson for Donald Trump during his first presidential debate with Hillary Clinton on Monday evening.

In response to a question on Twitter about the Republican nominee’s use of the word “braggadocious,” the dictionary said, “He was trying for braggadocio.”

While “braggodocio” can be found in most standard dictionaries — it refers to boastful behavior, or a braggart — the adjective version employed by Trump is considered by some to be an informal usage. Informal or not, “braggadocious” has been around for quite some time and has been spoken by Trump on the campaign trail before.

Trump’s use of the word Monday prompted both curiosity and humor online. Google Trends noted that searches for “braggadocious” spiked over searches for “Donald Trump” during the debate, and many social media users poked fun at the utterance. See some examples below.
